184. USA Leadership: The Cast of Characters (Revised)

20 Aug

Our country and our individual lives depend on our elected leadership. These leaders make life-and-death decisions that affect all of us. Citizens that are in the US military are directly affected by presidential and other decisions. They can die in battles. Our leaders can have a profound effect on our health care, financial, and educational success. In a decade or two, many, worldwide will die or lose all, due to global-warming decisions. Also, current leadership can profoundly affect our status as a nation devoted to democracy and ethics.

In this blog, I am expressing my opinions on key leaders, that affect us all (world-wide).

Donald Trump, Current President, Aspiring Dictator.   Please see my previous blogs on Trump failures, and of course, there are many books filled with descriptions of his nature and vile deeds. For me, two things are most important: his path towards autocracy, and his failure to work on climate change. Both have very serious long-term effects. He has friendly relationships with foreign tyrants and often insults our traditional allies. He trusts these tyrants more than our dedicated intelligence agencies. Today, 8-22-2019, he seems to be worsening, and his speech was very unpresidential and disorganized. Today he said “I am the chosen one.”

Trump family, Ivanka, Jared Kushner, Sons. Except for Ivanka, all are inane yes-men. I think Ivanka could well be a decent person if not controlled by her father.

Mitch McConnell (Moscow Mitch) Senate Majority Leader. MM is equal to Trump in vile leadership. He controls all of the bills that the US Senate considers. He even stops bills that have great popular support. Like Trump, his lack of integrity and patriotism approaches treason.

Stephen Miller, Advisor to Trump. This person could be the devil in disguise. He is the ultimate Trump sycophant and has really nasty ideas. Many of Trump’s worst ideas come from him.

Bill Barr, US Attorney General. Another horrible Trump sycophant. He lies and undermines the integrity of the Dept. of Justice that he administrates. Traditionally, the A.G. and DOJ have been indepedent and not under direct presidential control.

Koch Brothers, Owners of huge businesses, Major Repub contributors. Many of their businesses involve the burning of fossil fuels; so they oppose climate-change actions. The Kochs will bear much responsibility for global-warming caused fires, floods, starvation and terrible mass migrations. Their children may well suffer from their negligence. The pair are incredibly rich and could now devote part of their extreme wealth to saving the planet.

The Republican Party. This was once a party with some dignity and integrity. Now, after the better members have gradually left, it is composed of Trump robots. It is now Trump’s party.

Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of House. Speaker Pelosi has a very tough job. She definitely is a good person, but her caution on impeachment is questionable.

Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader. Schumer is an effective Democrat leader. I could also mention Adam Schiff and Jerry Nadler as great leaders.

Joe Biden: Former Veep, currently polling Top candidate for President. Joe Biden is a good and decent person, who would make a good president. However, a few of the other candidates are younger, stronger, and might do a better job. As polls indicate, he might well do best in beating Trump.

Elizabeth Warren, Senator, Rising candidate for President.   Warren may gradually pass Biden in popular support. I think she would make a great president and right now is probably my first choice. She is very well organized and effective. Warren has supported the ordinary US citizens for many years. As I write this, I am listening to her speak. She is very effective!

Other Democrat Pres. Candidates. Please see my past blogs for more info. Any of the candidates would be a thousand times better than Trump. I am going to include a few remarks. Pete Buttigieg may be the most intelligent and logical of the candidate group, but some voters will reject him for petty reasons. I liked Kamala Harris before she attacked Biden in a debate. The best Democrat strategy is the avoidance of such attacks; better to emphasize their own positive traits and experience. Perhaps Kamala just needs more experience.  Bernie Sanders is a great defender of middle-class values, and I applaud his efforts. But he is getting too old, and made the mistake of identifying himself as a “socialist.” I have to add a mention of Jay Inslee, who is dedicated to climate-change solutions, and has other outstanding qualifications. Update: Inslee just dropped out. I also want to mention Amy Klobuchar as outstanding.

Robert Mueller, Special Counsel.  Author of his famous Report. He is an outstanding leader and citizen with a long history of government service. His report is very comprehensive and provides definite information for impeachment. He is growing older and appears a little weak in public appearances. Many think he could have provided more definite conclusions in his report. His dedication to following certain “rules” may have somewhat limited his report.

Final thought.  Our country is at a crossroads. Every year we continue with Trump and the Republican party in power, we further erode out traditional values of integrity, democracy, and high ethics. Our citizens must choose whether to continue this or to vote in leaders with real integrity and competence.

161. Democrat Strategy for 2019

7 Apr

Recently, much has been said and written about Democrat strategy. As Trump continues to damage our country in his effort “to win,” and erase all of Barack Obama’s accomplishments, our primary concern is to put more Dems. into office. This blog presents an outline of issues and strategies that I consider most effective for our goals.

Far left ideas should be on a wish list, practical progressive ideas should form platforms (as a general rule). Winning elections is our primary goal. I favor many far left ideas and when we are in power, these can be ardently developed.

The biggest scam perpetrated by Repubs is that giving more money to very wealthy people and corps, will provide benefit to the non-rich. This scam is often called “trickle-down economics,” and history shows it does not work. Claims are made that by lowering taxes for the rich, corporations will increase wages. This generally does NOT happen. The extra money is mostly used for stock buy-backs and executive bonuses — little if any extra for the workers. After our treasury is robbed by lowered tax for the rich, Repubs plead that funds for Medicare, Social Security, infrastructure, education, etc. must be decreased, because we just can’t afford them. It is simple:

RICH made RICHER > Less Gov INCOME > Cut VITAL Programs

This scam has been used for decades.

Emphasis for political speeches should be:  1. Climate Change,  2. Healthcare, 3. Income equality and fair taxes, 4. infrastructure repair and advances, 5. Education, 6. Green jobs,  7. Revisions to criminal justice system  8. healthy environment, 9. Immigration laws, and many other areas. Climate change and healthcare stand out, but other areas are also vital.

Here is an example of how to state our goals: “improving healthcare and insurance coverage is vital, and we will consider ObamaCare improvements, Medicare for all, and other ideas.” If our ideals are carefully presented to the voters, we will have success. Very socialistic ideas presented too soon, just provide ammunition for Repubs.

Here are some slogans that we should put on signs, hats, t-shirts, and billboards:

Good healthcare for all

Climate-Change disasters, already here

Repubs purposely damaged ObamaCare

Tax the wealthy, they can afford it

“Trickle-down” doesn’t work

Less tax for the wealthy does not help us.

Trump creates crises to scam you.

Trump rules and scams by stoking fears

Extra Border walls won’t stop immigration or drugs

Tax breaks for Wealthy are permanent, for us, temporary

153. Current Issues, Briefly #2

20 Mar

This is the second of a series of blogs with brief discussions of current issues. The material is based on my Tweets, unpublished thoughts, and descriptions of various publications that are so important that they must be repeated and emphasized.

Who said: Mexico pays for wall, immediate replacement for ObamaCare, Medicare unchanged, so rich that donors not needed, ban all Muslims, climate-change is hoax, N. Korea is no longer a threat, he likes tyrants, Saudi MBS innocent, leave NATO, McCain not a hero, grab them by the pu..y ? We know who said all these things. Can anyone still support him? (Yes!, because he hates the same people that you do.)

It is very important that presidential candidates express themselves sensibly and honestly. Beto O did well when asked about healthcare. He said that Medicare-for-all was one of several good plans. Generally, anyone pledging a detailed specific plan is not realistic — too many contingencies.

Trump is angry with TV shows that mock him, but NOT the other side. Duh! You mock the bad, crude leaders, NOT those saying wise and respectable things.

For a long time, my top choice for president was Elizabeth Warren. I still think she would be a great president, but Beto O. is rising rapidly, and must be considered for his strength, popularity, sincerity, and intelligence. He may be the best for beating Trump and I agree 98% with his goals. On the other hand, Warren is coming up with some interesting tax proposals.

I am convinced that anyone over 80 is at least somewhat affected by memory loss and reduction in intellectual ability. Consequentially, I have eliminated some popular presidential candidates (B. Sanders, J. Biden, etc.) that will be over 80 by the middle of their first term in office. This is based on personal observations and established data.

As we enjoy advancing technology and cultural evolution there is a parallel development of corruption. We see this in almost every system, from car-repair to the USA gov. The latest scourge is in top college admissions; affected by bribery and false testing scores. The university admission scandal tells us at least two things. One is that many rich people are corrupt, the other is that college expenses are unjustly huge. As scammers gradually improve their skills, institutional expenses also must rise. Is there any solution to this enigma?

If you care about fixing Climate Change read this:   The marine microbe Prochlorococcus draws in CO2 and uses sunlight to produce oxygen and sugar. The functioning of this microbe may hold the key to reducing CO2 in the air, saving our planet from climate-change devastation.  Since the world is not doing so well in producing less carbon dioxide, it is very important to support promising research on REMOVING CO2 from the air. Penny Chisholm, in her recent TED talk, is one of the researchers in this area. This method may be key to saving our planet.  Please tell Trump and Congress to support research in this area and fund grants for testing.

Carbon Cure is a method of injecting CO2 into concrete. This removes it from the atmosphere and also helps to strengthen the concrete — so less is needed. Using this method, climate-change is helped in two ways. We need a POTUS that can support climate efforts like this.

(In answer to a Sean Hannity remark.)  Repubs love to distort facts. No one advocates pure socialism, which says ideally, all citizens must have the same amount of money by a redistribution of wealth. Democrats advocate better social programs, like Medicare, where non-rich benefit, and don’t worry – greedy rich folks will still be rich.

Manafort was just given a 47 month sentence, much lighter than the guidance. The judge made some remarks that very conservative politicians would say. Pres Reagan chose the judge, T. S. Ellis, a strong Virginia conservative, a fact not often mentioned. This is an example of the continuing damage to our country: the appointment of radically conservative judges.

Tom Steyer, “need to impeach” advocate, is a true patriot and national hero. He is working hard and spending much of his own money trying to fight the corrupt Trump gov.  For more info on corruption and the Trump-Russia connection, please see my previous blogs.

Major policies are always developed at the top of an organization. The Trump staff has had numerous convictions and indictments, and has well established unethical practices. It is no longer speculative, but a fact, that the corrupt nature of his staff proves that Trump is has promoted illicit methods. He is the cause of his staff corruption and voters must take note.

According to CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, French President Emmanuel Macron is proposing significant improvements to the EU including collective defense, guarding elections, minimum wages, new tech, and climate issues. Some of this is in response to D.T. abuse. Bravo to Macron. Sad about BREXIT. Maybe there should be another vote?

It’s really important that Democrat speeches and writing are accurate. We must be better than Don Trump. Failure to be exact and correct will cause distrust. We must always be the ones to be relied upon. Also, there is no point in promoting ideas that are very extreme. The most important thing about the next election is the “defeat.”

Just read some nonsense about Democrat Candidates. The Indian problem for Eliz. Warren is nonsense and so are criticisms of Kamala Harris when she was the state AG. The problems cited have nothing to do with future performance as president. Desperate people magnify slight negatives with no significance.

146. Slowing Trump’s Runaway Train

17 Feb

For about three years, the runaway Trump train, filled with Repubs,  raced down its tracks and seemed unstoppable. Trump felt like a king. He could get away with anything, and his sycophant crew totally backed him up.  But now, with the Democrats taking over the House of Reps., the train is slowing and starting to come under control.

A subsequent event was another defeat. The Trump wall was blocked and a gov shut-down was prevented. A woman was mostly responsible for this result. In a way, Trump has always waged war on women and now what could be called his second major defeat, was by a 78-year-old remarkable woman, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. This mild-mannered, polite, soft-spoken woman demonstrated the kind of power that we need to  guide our country. The threat of a second gov shut-down is over, Repubs are now, more than ever, getting off the Trump train. Senate leader Mitch McConnell now feels able to act more independently.

We now have a powerful Democrat party that is beginning true (unbiased) investigations. Trump lost his only way of defeating the Dem. House, which was the threat of a gov shut-down. Many people suffered from the long shut-down, but more would have suffered from an unchecked Trump. Primarily Nancy Pelosi made the extremely difficult decision to sacrifice the few, to save the many. Every US President makes almost impossible life-and-death choices. Soldiers are killed in our wars, shifting economics can cause deaths from starvation, healthcare policies will result in patient deaths, even taxation rules can elevate some and destroy others. Nancy P. stopping Trump truly saved lives.

Now, the Dems are better organized and have a wonderful choice to make: who will they select to beat Trump in the next election? Most of the candidates are well-qualified and would do a good job, a few, would do a great job. I stated some preferences in previous  blogs, but I am still gathering info and my mind is still open. When you have a difficult choice to make, it is really nice to have several really great alternatives.

So much more could be said but this (unlikely) story of the USA gov. But I want to close this blog with a thought. I can’t help thinking that Trump could have made a few different choices and could have gone down in history as a hero. He just did not have the intellect to see the best path, and was influenced by conservative radicals like Rush Limbaugh.  Briefly, he could have stopped the name calling and whimsical decisions. He could have continued vital international agreements like the Paris Climate Accord, the Iran Nuclear Deal, and genuine support of NATO. He could have built a coalition of allies to deal more effectively with China’s unfair trade policies. He could have consulted with true experts instead of his wealthy (and greedy) friends. He could have left alone regulations designed to protect the citizens.  All of these factors  would have been possible for any well-educated normal person, but not for him. The limited skills of a real estate developer are not applicable to the profound complexities of POTUS.

Added note: I am increasingly concerned about the gov neglect of climate-change solutions, and we are running out of time. Please talk about and contact our leaders re this vital topic. I have discussed and explained climate factors in many previous blogs.

142. Trump Nullification

31 Jan

All Democrats, many Republicans, and most citizens would like to terminate Trump‘s Presidency. Most established ways are too dificult or will take too long. Here are the possibilities.

Impeachment:  The House develops a set of articles and the Senate votes on conviction. This is not likely right now, since Repubs control the Senate.

25th Amendment.  The Vice President and cabinet members can determine that the President is unfit to serve, usually because of a physical problem. The 25th Amendment to the Constitution is applicable. This is also unlikely to implement because the sycophants in these positions are blind loyalists.

Hope for Resignation.  This is possible, but not likely given Trump’s goals.

Nullification This is possible and already somewhat in effect. Trump would stay in office, but Congress and his staff would create barriers so that he would lose most of his control. He could still do ceremonial and minor actions, but all major decisions would be made by others. An example is the bi-partisan committee that is dealing with southern border security. The committee is made up of Repub and Dem Congressmen. Trump is not invited to this process. He could veto any resulting legislation, but hopefully an override could provide passage. Trump’s hostage (or leverage) approach using a gov shut-down as a threat would not be possible under this nullification process. The hostage method of Trump is un-American and un-Constitutional.

In all other areas Congress or possibly other agencies like the CIA, DOJ, Military, etc. could in various ways, nullify Trump’s irresponsible “tweety” decisions. In the past there has been nullification, like removing papers from his desk, and simply delaying orders, which are eventually forgotten. What is also happening, is that leaders like USA Sec. of State have assured foreign leaders of USA alliance.

Trump’s lies and mistakes are increasing so that the nullification will be more and more necessary. At the same time, the Dems. must find the best possible candidate to defeat Trump in the next election.
